Sometimes I Need a Minute
I thought this time would pass.
Littles are now bigs,
Teenager and young adults,
Excited, worried, just trying to complete a task,
Advice, comfort, you’re on the right path,
But sometimes I need a minute when someone doesn’t need something.
I love that they talk about their days,
Not all parents get that glimpse.
The laughter, the gossip, the stress,
A window into their world,
It is a privilege to be their sounding board.
But sometimes I need a minute when someone doesn’t need something.
I am excited that summer brings them home.
The loud voices and chaos reminds me of their younger days,
The dinners together, the lively conversations,
Excited stories and funny reels at every turn,
I know not all kids look forward to their summer return.
But sometimes I need a minute when someone doesn’t need something.
They are changing and becoming real adults,
Their problems are bigger, so are their decisions,
They need more than a minute to talk them through;
They need a nudge or right question to bring their answer to the surface.
But sometimes I need a minute when someone doesn’t need something.
Nights I am tired or have an early morning,
Days working through my own challenges,
Trying to figure out my way,
Just some quite to calm my soul.
Sometimes I need a minute when someone doesn’t need something.
It always comes in a call, yell or quiet whisper,
Request for help, advice, question or an ear,
I am Mom and will always be.
It is a privilege these things are brought to me.
But sometimes I need a minute when someone doesn’t need something.
